Address by the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine

To deeply implement and carry forward the important proposal of General Secretary Xi Jinping on "prioritizing the health and well-being of our people," Dalian University of Technology officially established its Faculty of Medicine on October 7, 2022. This marked the realization of the medical dream for the university, which boasts a 73-year history of commitment to world-class higher education.

The experience of top universities in the world has demonstrated the pivotal role medical disciplines play in the growth and evolution of a university, and leading universities at home and abroad typically possess faculties of medicine. Hence, embarking on medical education not only is significant to the elevation of the university's overall academic standards but is also pivotal in achieving the strategic goal of building a world-renowned institution. Dalian University of Technology has consistently integrated its pursuit of excellence in education with the nation's developmental strategies. We have proactively responded to the "Healthy China" grand strategy while actively planning and pushing forward the establishment of our Faculty of Medicine. Relying on the discipline of Biomedical Engineering, we have initiated talent cultivation with a distinctive technical focus, training academic medical talents in emerging medical-engineering technologies and clinical medical talents adept at key technologies for diagnosing and treating major diseases. At the same time, we have also collaborated with our affiliated Cancer Hospital and Central Hospital to provide standardized training for resident doctors, thus pioneering a high-end talent cultivation model with the "DUT characteristics" in medical education.

In the next phase, guided by the essence of building a top national university and the requirements for developing "new medicine," we will follow a developmental approach that emphasizes "strengthening foundations, integrating medicine and engineering, orienting towards demands, and building excellence." Upholding the spirit of "virtue, medical dedication, precision, and compassion," and leveraging our robust engineering prowess, we will begin with the "integration of medicine and engineering," aiming to establish comprehensive departments for basic medicine, clinical medicine, biomedical engineering, and pharmacy. We will also set up new research institutions such as the Institute of Tumor Medicine, Institute of Cardio-Cerebrovascular Medicine, and the Cross-disciplinary Medical Research Institute, thereby creating a diversified framework for medical education. Our goal is to develop a new medical discipline characterized by "precision medicine, translational medicine, intelligent medicine, digital healthcare, and medicine-engineering integration" that boasts the unique "DUT flavor."

"With integrity and reverence for medicine, we aspire to reach the pinnacle of excellence; where ambitions guide, no distance can betide." In the future, we will join hands with global partners dedicated to serving human health. Together, we will explore new avenues in medical talent cultivation, gradually building a distinctively featured, high-quality talent cultivation base for medical education and research with seamless integration of medicine, engineering, and the sciences. Meanwhile, we aspire to innovate a holistic cultivation model for high-end composite talents in both medicine and engineering so as to position the Faculty of Medicine as a new pinnacle of the university's comprehensive reforms and high-quality development. In this process, we aim to inject new vitality into China's high-quality development of the healthcare industry, thus making even greater contributions to a "Healthy China".
